Celebrating Uniqueness
Through Nanas
One of the most powerful workshops I had the privilege to run was inspired by the visionary artist Niki de Saint Phalle. In her work, she created bold, vibrant sculptures known as Nanas joyful, expressive figures that celebrated the strength, beauty, and diversity of the female form. Inspired by her vision, the students in this workshop created their own Nanas, each one a unique reflection of self-expression and empowerment.
For many of these young artists, this was their first experience working with sculpture a process that encouraged them to step outside their comfort zones. At first, some hesitated, unfamiliar with the hands-on, tactile nature of sculpting. But as the session unfolded, something incredible happened. The barriers of comparison, competition, and perfectionism disappeared, and each student found joy in shaping, painting, and designing their own Nana.
Every sculpture was a personal statement, free from limitations. The girls explored dynamic poses arms raised in triumph, legs playfully kicked up, bodies twisted in movement symbolizing confidence and self-acceptance. They selected bold, unapologetic colors and designed intricate patterns that told their own unique stories.
The result? A breathtaking collection of Nanas no two alike, each one a celebration of individuality. There was no “right” or “better” piece only authentic, creative expression. This project was not just about art; it was about breaking societal molds, challenging the rigid expectations placed on young women, and proving that imperfection is beauty.
These Nanas now stand as a testament to self-acceptance and empowerment a reminder that creativity is a space where everyone belongs.

From shaping wire frames and layering with paper mâché, to building the form using a mix of plaster and glue, and finally finishing them with colours and patterns that celebrate each student’s individuality.
